How to use Facebook ads to test 2 different covers

Published 9 months ago • 1 min read

I'm writing a new thriller! And I even got the first draft of my cover today!

I have no idea why, but getting my cover commissioned tends to be one of my biggest procrastination pitfalls, so I'm excited that the ball is already rolling.

My cover designer has given me quite a few lovely drafts, and now I get to choose which I like most! But here's what I'm NOT going to do.

I'm not going to post the drafts in my Facebook group and ask my readers, "Which cover do you like the most?" That's kind of similar to asking the kids in high school who they're voting for for class president. You can SAY one thing but still do another.

So what's a better way to choose a cover?

See what gets you the best clicks when your potential readers ACTUALLY see it! A simple way to do this is with Facebook ads.

Step 1: Make a simple mockup with Cover A and Cover B. You'll have 2 different images that are identical except for the cover.

Step 2: Run a low-budget Facebook ad to your target audience ($10 or $20 total should probably be enough to get you good results). Keep everything the same except the image. If your book isn't up for preorder yet, the link you take them to can be an excerpt or coming soon page.

Step 3: Compare the click through rates for each cover. The winner is the cover with the higher CTR like in this hypothetical example:

I feel like Cher and I just turned back time! When I first started Facebook ads circa 2017, ten-cent clicks were good and not super hard to come by. Yes, you needed a good image and good copywriting, but in general it wasn't like you felt like a unicorn for 10 or even single-digit cent clicks. As basically everybody knows, Facebook ads have gotten more and more expensive. Last year, I slowed down my FB spending because my clicks were creeping above 30 cents! Ouch! Then in February I...
